The Power of Social Media for Campus Initatives

On January 20, 2012 I had the opportunity to present a session on, "The Power of Social Media- and How to Use it Effectively. The session was presented to a planning group at UW-La Crosse who are considering a social media initative to explain key issue of a student referendum to fund a new student center. The session graphically illustrated how social media can affect political issues. This workshop took the social media strategies used in politics and applied them to a project to explain and obtain support for a new student center complex.

Some key decisions and outcomes from the workshop included the following:

1) when using Twitter- decide upon who approves the tweets.
2) consider what Facebook apps are most appropriate for this initative
3) consider using rich media within the social media framework
4) consider using an interactive blog to continue the social conversation
5) promote the work you are doing with social media, in traditional media such as campus newsletters, e-mails, and the local press.

As the 2011 ECAR study states, the overarchiving observation is that, "technology could be used more strategically to engage students in academic life." In this project, we will see if we can accomplish this goal.

Learning Spaces by Design

On October 25, 2011 I was a guest presenter at the Education Environments Symposium held at the Dekalb Office Customer Experience Center in Alpharetta, GA. The title of the presentation was, "Learning Spaces by Design- How we can revitalize teaching, learning, and collaboration." The objective of the session was to review a wide variety of learning space designs throughout the U.S. and the world, and to cover 10 core design space concepts that should be included in any learning space project. Both successes and failures in learning space design and integration were illustrated and explained. The Center was filled with innovative and ergonomic settings and designs.

One of the most intriguing featured elements was the innovative "node" chair which promotes flexible mobility and collaborative seating. The striking ergonomic design provides the opportunity to redefine the traditional "front of the classroom" and helps to empower both the student and faculty member to creatively innovate the teaching and learning activities. The seating design also provides a "cubby" place which is particularly helpful in cold weather climates where students have heavy clothing, backpacks, and other items. Considering space, place, and teaching and learning activities can greatly enhance the educational and social experience.

Another innovative design which was featured was the media:scape concept. This innovative product provides collaboration through a variety of seating arrangements, switching of computer signals from

collaborators, and also HD video conferencing options. To share computer screens, collaborators merely have to click a "puck device" which displays their specific computer screen. The product is described as having the ability to break down "barriers and democratizes how people access and share information by allowing....participants to contribute to their ideas- equally, quickly, and seamlessly." This event brought faculty and staff from universities, colleges, and school districts together with architects to learn and discuss the key design concepts of ensuring the effective creation and integration of learning spaces. Occupy Wall Street Has WI Connection Through Social Media

When hearing the news media talk about Occupy Wall Street #OWS , it is important to look deeper into what the movement means on a global and personal scale. One attempt to gain a better understanding of the OWS phenomenon, and to provide some context to the discussion, is through an innovative use of CNN's iReports. Anyone can become an iReporter. Basically, after signing up for an account, an individual anywhere in the world with Internet access or a cell phone can immediately upload a photo, video, or narrative of what they are experiencing. It brings important global and local issues to the forefront, anytime, anywhere, and about anything of importance to the iReporter.

For OWS, CNN iReporters were asked to report on their impressions on the issue. This provided an opportunity to research the use of social media in politically charged environments, and how OWS affects people's lives. In this example, a person in La Crosse, WI was interviewed on how
Occupy Wall Street Was Inspired by the Wisconsin Protests affected him. In the article, Craig explained that the political protests in Wisconsin help to inspire the people in New York to begin the Occupy Wall Street efforts. He continued by saying that he is been unemployed for over a year. In his words, "We need to connect the dots from what is happening in Wisconsin, to what is happening in New York." Through the iReports, we can gain some context on OWS throughout the world through the personal stories of those who are affected. Social media provides the mechanism for us to better understand issues, and people.

The Impact of Social Media in Politics

On October 7, I had the opportunity to present the session, "The Impact of Social Media: Authentic Leanring in Politically Charged Environments." The session was part of a day long workshop hosted by the University of Wisconsin System Learning Technology Development Council (LTDC). The entire event was entitled, "Authentic Learning with Digital Media." You can follow the Twitter feed from the conferencer at #LTDCWRS.

My session graphically showed how social media can reinforce, influence, and change opinions in politically charged environments- in this case in Wisconsin beginning in February 2011. By showcasing CNN iReports, YouTube, and Twitter feeds, a chronological case study illustrated how social media can present fact, and fiction, to the world. Over 90,000 CNN iReport views, 500 global comments, and numerous press announcements help to put the polticial upheavel in Wisconsin in context, augmented with examples of how social media played a pivotal role in shaping and changing opinions.

Creating a Sense of Collaboration

When we want to create an environment which engages faculty with learners, we need to consider creating spaces that promote discussion and collaboration. First we need to have curriculum which promotes opportunities of collaborative learning. Then, we can focus on some of the ways we can enhance this experience through a series of design and technology options.

An innovation room conceived to complement collaboration

Selecting tables and chairs with wheels helps to promote an environment of flexibility and innovation. In addition, providing plenty of "analog" white boards encourages the sharing of concepts and ideas. Providing a main projection screen, along with flat panel monitors located around the room provides the opportunity to direct attention to the front of the room, or to group work.

In this room faculty have the flexibility to select multiple video sources in the front of the room, or to the "group work" at one of the three flat panels around the perimeter of the space. The faculty also have full control of lighting and presentation sources via a touch panel at the podium. This innovation room make the learning environment flexible, engaging, and very collaborative.

Learning and Social Meeting Spaces Redefining Learning Experiences

As new academic buildings are conceived and constructed, considering teaching and learning activities along with social interactions are important issues to think about. We are at a point where we need to consider what we want as outcomes of our space design, before we put faculty, staff, and students into our environments. At the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Centennial Hall was developed with an eye on the past 100 years of the university's existence, and an eye on the next 100 years. There are a number of key concepts that personifies how we can blend teaching and learning, and student and faculty interactions. In the building there are traditional lecture halls of 250 occupants. These lecture halls are carefully sloped for easy access, provide exceptional sound treatment and accoustics, comfortable seating, full HDCP digital switching capability, and dual screen projection. In addition to traditional seating, the building also has innovative collaborative, flexible collaborative spaces.

Open areas with comfortable seating promote interaction

The building also provides large open areas for students and faculty to interact, network, and collaborate. These open areas provide comfortable seating, wireless Internet, and pleasing color scheme and lighting. In providing multiple effective learning environments, coupled with open meeting spaces, a cohesive and integrated space can promote learning and social interaction.

In future reviews, I will anlayze in more detail specific learning spaces within the building, and explain how certain spaces can enhance interation and collaboration during the teaching and learning activities.

September 11, 2001 Remembered

On September 11, 2001, we all watched in disbelief of the terror attach on the U.S. We had just finished remodeling our Wing Technology Center with the latest in classroom technology and new learning space environments. I was very proud and gratified of the result. Then, early on September 11th, we all watched the stunning events of the fateful day unfold as the video and images were projected in our new classrooms throughout the building. Here we had the latest technology to enhance our learning, and there on the screens were images of tragedy and destruction. Several days later, I asked and received permission to put an American flag, framed on red, white, and blue burning, on the front of our new building. When I look at this photograph a decade later, I can still clearly remember what I felt and thought on that day.

Social Media in Politically Charged Environments

I recently presented a first-in-a-series session on the use of "Social Media in Politically Charged Environments." This in-depth and well documented project, includes images, videos, blogs, YouTube video, and Twitter feeds as it portrays the impact of social media on the political environment in Wisconsin since February 2011. Included in the presentation are CNN iReports which were tracked through the U.S. news media, and worldwide. Screen shots captured the dramatic speed and distribution of information throughout the world. In addition, comments highlighted and documented the high emotions of people globally, on the political issues and environment in the state. Analytical data highlighted from selected YouTube videos through "YouTube's Insight" illustrated the age group, gender, geographic location of the viewership. Faculty at the presentation were engaged and, at times, overwhelmed of the emotion from the documented videos.

One faculty commented, "I was at the March 12th protests in Madison, and seeing the video makes my hair stand up on the back of my neck." Another faculty member, who originally was from Iran reflected, "I thought this footage was from Washington, DC!" I informed her that no, this was shot in Madison. She continued by saying that these protests look like the ones in Iran over 30 years ago.

To Empower With Technology

I just completed a new video entitled, "To Empower With Technology." The concept of the video is to illustrate how today's college students perceive technology in their lives and in their education. The program touches on social networking and communications, and challenges the viewer to consider how technology empowers us all. The program recently "kicked off" the EDUCAUSE Midwest Conference held in Chicago, IL. It preceeded a keynote address by Michael Wesch, best known for his engaging videos, The Machine and Us (over 11 million views) and also A Vision of Students Today, (over 4 million views). Michael was referred to as "the explainer" by Wired Magazine. He is an Associate Professor of Cultural Antropology at Kansas State University.

I had the pleasure to meet, and also convene a discussion with Michael Wesch at the EDUCAUSE Midwest Conference held in Chicago, IL. Michael had been referred to as "the explainer" by Wired magazine. He is a cultural anthropologist that explores the effects of new media on society and culture. As a professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University, his YouTube video, "A Vision of Students Today," has over 4 million views. Madison College Convocation-Constructing New Opportunities for Learning

On January 4-5, 2011 I had the opportunity of providing the keynote address, "Dynamic Technologies to Engage Learners" and also two breakout sessions entitled, "Building Bridges to Innovative Learning Environments." The theme of the Convocation was, "Constructing New Opportunities for Learning." I found the experience exceptionally well conceived and planned. The college writes that the event is used as a strategy for promoting learning, discussion and development of common ground about teaching and learning among faculty and staff." Some of the topics covered included, teaching and learning, learning space design, student sucess, active learning, and student engagement through technology.

My keynote session was given in the Mitby Theater. It is an excellent facility that seats approximately 1000. Madison College was recently successful in securing $133 million dollars in funding to aid in the construction of new facilities and to incorporate innovative teaching and learning environments to the campus. The Convocation was an excellent first step for both faculty and staff to understand and be a part of the process.

On December 15th, Sonic Foundry originated a global webcast from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The topics including a presentations by Bill Cherne entitled, "Understanding Mediasite Security", John Pollard on Mediasite 5.5 and integration with Camtasia Relay, and Kristin Zurovitch explained the new MUG Community web presence, and UNLEASH 2011. I provided a video tour of the Wing Technology Center and our new Academic Building. Terry Wirkus provided technical support, and well as "priceless" stories from La Crosse.

EDUCAUSE International Conference Presentation

At the EDUCAUSE Conference in Anaheim, I was an invited guest presenter to talk about a national "hot topic"- namely how to create effective IT organizational structure. The presentation entitled, "Avoiding Your IT House of Cards- Building Your Own Solid Foundation" was extremely well received and included a dynamic collaborative discussion on how to build better functional enterprises. The PowerPoint is now available on the EDUCAUSE conference web site. Keys to success include: communication, collaboration, employee satisfaction, being a leader, understanding advocacy, empathy, identifying failure and learning from it, and identifying and eliminating silos.

There's an App for That!

On August 31, I held an interactive poster presentation at the 12 Annual Teaching and Learning Conference held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The title of the presentation was, "There's an App for That- Using iPads in Education." Matt Ebert (photo-right) and Kevin Mont from Apple Corporation collaborated with me on the session. Approximately 200 faculty members attended and interest was extremely high for this new mobile appliance. I showcased some free and very intriguing apps and also demonstrated how to project selected applications to an external monitor or video projector. Videos and web pages can display fairly well, but most other applications cannot be projected at this time. I am certain this situation will quickly change as more apps are added daily. There is also interest in how Flash video could play on the iPad but this is still under development. We shall see how this unfolds.

Some of the most interesting apps discussed include:

Planets- see what constellations and planets can be seen at specific times and locations
AppsMosaic- get a random search of free and paid apps with a mosaic interface- it's fast!
Shakespeare- download the best of the playwright for free
Bombardier- a game that helps you to understand gravitational forces- very addictive
Action Buggy- a game that improves your hand (finger) and eye coordination
Epic Citadel- demonstration of high quality graphics, navigation, and sound- highly recommended!
VGA Expedition- display some apps on an external monitor or projector
X Invasion 2- free game for flying a fighter jet or Corsair aircraft- get a sense of flying and navigation
Dinosaurs- Tour the American Museum of Natural History for free
Gravity HD- game of logic and physics- highly interactive game, and allows for custom design
Crystal Portal HD- interactive mystery with high quality graphics, music, requiring problem solving skills
Louvre- tour artwork, learn about the masters, and take it on your own tour at the Louvre for free

UNLEASH 2010 International Conference

I just returned from the Sonic Foundry UNLEASH International Conference in Madison, WI. The event was extremely well attended with attendees from all across the U.S., in addition to my colleagues from Brazil, Helder Conde, Atitude Digital Media; Leon Huijbers, Technische Universtiteit Delft, the Netherlands; and Mark Dashper, University of Aukland.

I gave a presentation entitled "Creating Rich Media-Bringing Good Things to Life." The key concept was to utilize the MUSE strategy when developing rich media for academic and administrative uses, M=memorable, U=understandable, S=sustainable, and E=emotional. EDUCAUSE 2010 Midwest- Learning Space Workshop

I presented the workshop "Navigating Your Path When Designing Effective Learning Spaces" at the 2010 EDUCAUSE Midwest Regional Conference. The session looked at current trends worldwide regarding learning space design, but also core concepts such as learning space assessment, design consideration, learning commons, furniture, podium design, teaching and learning, sustainability, and Web 2.0 in the design.

Participants broke out in groups to discuss their specific opportunities and challenges in their own project design and implementation. General trends emerged from their individual projects that had universal implications to the group. Attendees came from throughout the Midwest, with one attendee from New Zealand.

Merging Learning Space with Web 2.0

Today, when designing new learning spaces perhaps we should reflect on how these environments can be enhanced with Web 2.0 technologies. While, some of these technologies may have no immediate effect on the spaces we create, perhaps when we think about how students utilize rich media in their social lives, and academic lives, we can maximize their learning (and social) environment. One area we can make an immediate impact is with furniture.

Steelcase has come up with the concept called Media:Scape. The concept brings students around a table with comfortable seating, but more importantly it provides a mechanism for each student to share their computer "image" by way of an innovative "puck." You simply click on the puck, and your computer is displayed on the main monitor. This Media:Scape provides the opportunity for students to share and collaborative. This same system is being used at Drexel University in the Hagerty Library atrium. As we design spaces to promote collaboration, simply changing the furniture can help to enhance the experience for the students.

Learning Commons at UW-Milwaukee Invites Collaboration

Collaborative Learning Spaces Part Deux

Designing collaborative learning spaces which are scalable is an important element in planning. Initially a model collaborative space was developed in our Wing Technology Center to demonstrate to faculty, staff, and students the concept of collaborative spaces. From there, a larger space was created in our Murphy library. This space was tested and video analyzed to see how students would effectively utilize the collaborative area. Stage three was to expand the space, again using Herman Miller Resolve furniture. In this stage you can see the dynamics of students working together. Encouraging faculty to develop curriculum that requires group work only strengthens the campus utilization of collaborative learning spaces. Developing a scalable design will ensure a sustainable model for the future.

Educational Technologies in a Challenging Economy

I moderated the multipoint teleconference which included a distinguished panel of Frye Fellows from 2005: Dr. Sharon E. Prof. of Literature and Media, Honors College; Helen Chu, Director, Academic Technology, University of Oregon; Rick Holmgren, Ph.D., Executive Director, Learning, Information, and Technology Services, Allegany College; William Mayer, Librarian, American University, Washington, D.C.; Jenny Mehmedovic, Assistant to the Provost, University of Kansas.

Project Technology

This year, we are following five faculty members as they work towards integrating appropriate technology into their classes. This project is a "take off" of the popular reality TV program, Project Runway, which appears on the Bravo TV Channel. For our "project" we followed faculty members as they undertook a four-part challenge: 1) to integrate appropriate technology into their teaching and learning activities, 2) to engage students, 3) to improve learning, and 4) to document their results. Basically we took the TV camera into their offices and

Redefining Residence Halls

Residence halls are now providing opportunities to provide new presentation areas, as well as offering the chance to provide a wide variety of student services. Universities and campuses across the U.S. are considering ways to enhance the student experience by providing additional services such as tutoring, counseling, and technology support in residence halls. Some institutions are also considering embedding faculty in the building to assist students in their learning. This is an important step in providing services to the Millennial student of today. Today, learning occurs well beyond 5:00pm. The Internet is open 24 hours a day. This begs the question, "are we available to help students during the same time frame?" The photo (left) shows a technology space in Reuter Hall on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. It comes with a full complement of presentation equipment with remote control of the equipment, large front projection screen complemented with a large screen flat panel which can display presentation material, cable TV, or provide video conferencing capability.

On May 21, 2007 I was invited to visit and present at Central College located in Pella, IA. It was an excellent example of a smaller private college with a commitment to effective classroom technologies with an eye on the importance of LEED certification. Classroom designs were refreshing and innovative. Classroom controls was through touch panel AMX units, with attention to room design, color, and ergonomics. I was able to lead a campus discussion on a the "what if's" of engaging students with technology, while addressing the need for vibrant learning environments. Currently the campus is looking into a new $20 million facility with the goal of a Platinum LEED certification.

Learning Space Design-UW-System

On April 23, 2007 I presented a session on focusing on learning space design entitled, "Strategic Advances with Technology." The presentation was given at the UW-System Joint Technology Conference held in Green Lake, WI. This conference brings together technology professionals in networking, faculty development, media, and libraries. The presentation showcased learning space design principles throughout the US and in Europe. Special emphasis was placed on collaborative learning spaces in libraries. I was able to show the transformation of a collaborative space in a library by documenting the process through video. The results graphically show student first working individually, then working in groups, and finally enjoying a new coffee area which brings faculty together with students. In the end, engaging both groups make for a stronger connection in the learning process, particularly outside the traditional classroom.

Naval Postgraduate School Visit

On March 28 and 29th, I had the opportunity to present two keynote addresses on "Rules of Engagement-Strategic Advances with Technology" at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Nearly 1,500 students attend the Naval Postgraduate School. The student body consists of officers from the five U.S. uniformed services, officers from approximately 30 other countries and a small number of civilian employees. Selection of officers for fully funded graduate education is based upon outstanding professional performance as an officer, promotion potential and a strong academic background.

The presentations focused on learning space design, but also included best practices in utilizing specific technologies to engage the learner. Technologies such as Tablet PC's, DyKnow collaborative software, Camtasia, and Mediasite streaming were highlighted. In addition, some time was spent on new innovations such as Perceptive Pixel's finger display technology and flexible displays for the future were discussed.

The Naval School has a full complement of technology classrooms and is analyzing and researching how we can enhance our learning spaces to engage current and future learners. Time was also spent in discussing how we may refine the library of the future. Creating new collaborative learning spaces in the library is of high interest.

Mediasite Collaborative Learning Space Presentation

A new Mediasite presentation on Learning Space Design for Collaborative Spaces is now available. Rules of Engagement-EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas, TX

On October 11th, 2006 I presented at the EDUCAUSE international conference in Dallas. The program, entitled, Rules of Engagement, presented a variety of strategies to engage the "Millennial" student. Topics covered included learning space design, digital video, Video Over IP, Tablet PC technologies, and student response systems. Of particular interest to the group was a discussion on how to design and develop collaborative learning spaces. There is a growing trend for universities and colleges to set aside spaces in new and remodeled spaces where students can interact and collaborate on specific projects. The key is to decide early on what the teaching and learning activities will be. From there, it is important to consider both room design and technologies employed simultaneously. After your space has been completed, it is important to make sure the space is being utilized as you envisioned. If the space isn't promoting collaboration, it could be due to several reasons. One reason could be that your faculty haven't developed curriculum that focuses on collaborative projects. Another obstacle is that students may not be aware that they can talk openly in newly developed collaborative spaces. This is a common phenomena in newly created library collaborative learning space. Careful planning, effective implementation, and prudent assessment will yield successful results.

Transforming old spaces to new meeting and learning environments

There are many potential areas that could be transformed into vibrant examples of new learning spaces. It takes vision, careful planning, and advocacy to make it happen. Take the following example. The before image (left) is a photo of our traditional faculty senate chambers. It was used for many years, including the smart yellow chairs and elegant orange carpeting. The important point here, is that someone needs to present the case of "what if's", or in other words, "How could this space be remodeled to foster interactive meetings, and also provide a new learning space for faculty and students with appropriate technology.

After conceiving of the transformation, a presentation to the faculty senate committee was the next step. It was here that I layed out the potential for lighting/dimming control, touch panel control of all technology, wireless internet, and new chairs, U-shaped tables, electronically controlled shades, and video conferencing capability. The capacity to record proceedings and meetings to a digital video recorder was an added plus.

The after image clearly shows the transformation. People are put into a more interactive and collaborative space. The technology, while present, is actually translucent to the space. It's a comfortable environment promoting interaction, as well as presentation. Lighting, audio, and projection can be customized for practially any situation. The key to this success is vision, planning, and advocacy. With these three elements, your new space is more likely to be successful.

Collaborative Learning Environments 2

A new collaborative learning space was unveiled on our campus, as part of our Passport to Technology 3. A small version of the Herman Miller Resolve system has been installed, to complement a larger layout in our Murphy Library. There has been a continual and collaborative process of meetings and discussion between myself and the planning committee in our library. The layout in the photo (left) shows a system to introduce a collaborative learning environment to faculty and students. It will be a place where we can discuss the philosophy of collaborative learning, and how we develop teaching strategies to enhance student learning. We will be tracking how students utilize these new learning environments, and assess how we may "roll out" additional collaborative learning areas in the library and around campus.

Collaborative Learning Environments
When designing new learning spaces, it is important to consider the physical environment, the layout of the space, and the objective of the space in relation to the student. If you have the opportunity to begin with an open area (new or remodeled), surveying many different learning environment before you begin drawing the first line of your design is very important. In my research, I came upon the Herman Miller Resolve system. It is a very unique design with excellent design characteristics. The concept is built upon a matrix structure based upon 120-degree angles. As the literature states, it is an "open, inviting, space-efficient workstations where people feel "comfortable and connected." This concept is very conducive for collaborative learning. I have designed a small demonstration space for this system in our Wing Technology Center, and have been working with our collaborative planning group in Murphy Library to integrate a larger "wishbone" layout. We will be working together to collect data on how students use these spaces to promote learning and interaction in their "university experience." Collaborative Spaces in Europe
Designing new collaborative learning spaces has become an important discussion in IT and Library circles. This trend is not only occurring in the United States, but also worldwide. The image on the left is from the Metropolitan University in London. This collaborative space is used by college students, but also for special computer workshops for younger adults. These spaces provide an opportunity for learners to work individually, in groups, and also provides the chance to work collaboratively with faculty and instructors. In this example, a group is given a project to solve a problem. The students formulate their own individual solutions, work as a group, and then consult with the teacher. This changes the classroom dynamic from a traditional (more passive) lecture format, to a situation where the learner and teacher are more engaged. Designing collaborative environments requires the designer to think about space, furniture, and room flexibility. AC power is probably more of a concern than network access, as wireless connectivity is becoming more of a standard for technology spaces. Carefully thinking about the space well in advance of any implementation is essential to provide an environment for effective teaching and learning. Designing Effective Learning Spaces

When you think about redesigning a classroom, it includes much more than just room height, width, and depth. In addition to the traditional measurements, one has to consider how the room matches the teaching and learning activities for the curriculum. For example, does the teaching activities require an interactive U-shaped table, does the activity require a collaborative environment for flexible work group? All of these issues need to be part of the discussion early on in the planning process. Involving key stake holders is very important. Other key elements to consider are lighting, sound reinforcement and insulation, table and chair ergonomics, line of site and projection screen placement, and technology equipment considerations. All of these elements must be considered in an interactive way. If you change or modify one element, it will likely have an impact on others. The key in this process, is frequent discussions well before the architect begins to draw the first wall boundary on paper. You should decide upon on the building or room philosophy, and then work collaboratively to design the most effective learning space to accentuate student learning or training. The extra up front work will pay huge dividends down the road.

Wing Technology Center

This is the Wing Technology Center where I am located. I had the distinct opportunity to work closely with the architectural firm in designing teaching and learning spaces in this facility. Interestingly enough, the original building was a library built back in 1956, the year I was born. And then, I had a chance to work with a team to create a new technology hub for the campus. The Florence Wing Building was renamed Wing Technology Center in the fall of 2001. Learning Spaces With Technology

In some regard, the title of this blog, "Learning Space" has a variety of meanings. This site is meant to provide you with many items to learn and experience. One area I have a specific interest is the design of actual learning environments or, in this case "learning spaces." At the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I have had the opportunity to conceive and build a variety of spaces for various teaching and learning activities. If I had a trademark design, it would be my U-shaped interactive space. In this design, the U-shaped table promotes interaction between the participants, and allows for good site lines to a presenter in front of the room. With the appropriate technology and control, ergonomic seating, and room lighting, this can be a very effective teaching and learning area.
